We (society) have come a long way since 1943...
Now I am off to catch a plane, rent a car, drive to a client site, and work in California for the rest of the week...All by myself.

Where in the world did you get that? I'd like to think of myself as a little cantankerous and fussy, but not husky. I guess I wouldn't be good in the workforce.
