We visited the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center in West Yellowstone during our Hebgen Lake stay. We go nearly every year and I am always in awe.
They were doing testing on this supposedly bear proof garbage dumpster. It took the bear about three minutes to figure out that he had to turn his hand over and how to maneuver the latch to open the lid.
Then he was able to eat whatever it was that drew him to the dumpster.
This is Sam. He is a seriously big grizzly. He was rescued from Alaska and is twice the size of the grizzlies that live in Yellowstone.
Here are all the kids in a bear trap.
Isn't she a great big sister?
This year George was old enough to participate in the Jr. Ranger program and got to hide food for the grizzly's. Here he is preparing to enter the bear habitat.
Receiving instructions from the naturalist (they don't call them forest rangers anymore).
Hiding food for the bears.
The kids threw apple slices into the pond and this bear went straight to them as soon as the kids were removed from the habitat.
I have no desire to ever encounter a bear of any sort in the wild.

that place looks fascinating. my favorite is the picture of all the kids in the bear trap...it's a great picture.
Yikes. Cool but kind of creepy too.
I love George's face. He is a very serious Jr Ranger. I am most likely going to have bear dreams tonight...not good ones.
Bears. Oh MY!
That bear trap...Do they by any chance sell those at the gift shop? I could use one around 3:00 every day.
Scary! A kid in our ward was attacked by a bear at scout camp this summer and my kids are totally freaked out by bears right now. Looks like so much fun for kids....not so much for the parents!
Wow that is a huge bear!! I love that place it is amazing to watch the bears up close. They are incredible and frighting animals.
