I don't listen to country music but apparently Brad Paisley sings a song about what he would say if he could write a letter to himself at age 17. Here are a few of the things I wish I would have said to my 17 year old self.
1. Don't make a mountain out of a molehill. Seriously, don't do it. You really need to learn this one, once and for all.
2. Don't so fully absorb yourself in the life of your boyfriend that you don't explore your own individuality. Trust me, he isn't the wind beneath your wings. You aren't going to marry him and will only end up with 22 dance photos of the two of you together and really lame stories to tell your kids about your high school years.
3. Don't wear a peach dress to Homecoming.
4. Don't go to 22 high school dances with the same guy. I am serious about that molehill thing.
5. Just be yourself.
6. Spend more time figuring out what you like and don't like.
7. Don't get crazy and burn all of your journals one night just because you feel bad about all the horrible things you wrote about your parents and the lusty desires you wrote about your afore mentioned boyfriend.
8. Pay no attention to what other people say: Claw bangs are awesome and make you look way hott.
9. Learn to fall asleep listening to music so that you don't hear things you shouldn't.
10. You are right...Math won't really do you any good in this life.
11. Just one more thing about the boyfriend and molehill thing...You will find someone (actually he will find you) who will make you feel a happiness more intense than you are currently able to imagine. He will also love you for exactly the person you are and you will figure out who that person is and love her too.
p.s. Thanks for starting such a great tag.

Sometimes I read your blog and think that I need to find myself a good therapist. You make me think and then all kinds of things happen. And I doubt that my "super-cool"/totally insecure
17-year old self would have listened to the 31-year old me.
I love all the ones about your boyfriend. Wow, you must have spent a lot of time with him!
You forgot to tell yourself to be nice to your younger sister, she really isn't that bad. Oh and let her borrow your clothes when she asks. :)
I'm totally teary eyed after reading your last note to self. You and Paul truly are perfect for each other. We love and admire you guys so much. I hope you now know, and have realized, how special you are. You have taught me so many things for which I will forever be grateful.
Ah-h-h-h Claw Bangs- we all looked hot, didn't we? Great post, Amy- You're such a deep thinker- I've always loved that about you. Maybe I'll grow up to be like you...
Hey, I resent #2,3,and 4. They worked out GREAT for me. I don't know what you're talking about, I love my 22 Dance Pictures with the same guy :)
OKAY... I liked the peach homecoming dress and it was the best formal I ever sewed!!! And you looked beautiful in it.. and it was a work of love and ....I won't take your comment to heart :) I still love you.
Those were totally right on!! Man, my list would be so long. But in the end, the means to get to where we are really did pay off didn't they?
That was pretty funny.
By the way, I thought I had come up with a great idea for a website but then I saw the link to goodreads.com on your blog. Looks like someone beat me to it.
Peach dresses are hot, wearing your high school boyfriends jersey is way hot too, not that you ever did that! I do have to say that I witnessed your departure from your comfort zone and I thought you made the transition very well! It all started on that crazy trip to St. George for Spring Break our Senior year. Does Nate Hammond ring a bell? I do think that once we all realized that I.F. was not the center of the universe, we started to leave the molehills, claw bangs, and boyfriend obsessing behind. I just try to remember that growing up in the 80's was very unfortunate, especially in the hair department!
Sorry, I didn't mean to be anonymous!
I loved this post. I totally agree with the boyfriend thing...Who knew that seven years of drama would all end up with nothing? I'm glad you're reading my blog. Your boys are SO stinking cute. Love it!
