flashback friday

Remember when the worst thing ever happened to me? Due to several recent mouse sightings here in Driggs I am now wearing my shoes in the house, keeping the lights on at all times, making sure my feet are off the floor whenever possible, and having flashbacks of the infamous church bag incident of 2007. And of course who could forget the mouse in the pantry episode? Not me, not ever.

Nasty, Nasty, Nasty!

Ever since the church bag incident Paul has been trying to trap mice and figure out how they get into our house. He caught one a few weeks ago in the garage but since then he has only been able to catch frogs (apparently we also have a frog problem but they are cute and harmless so I am not worried) in his garage traps. He has never caught a mouse in the house traps and we have never seen one even though we see droppings every once in a while. It is a source of major stress for me and last night Paul was saying that he couldn't figure why he hadn’t been able to catch on or where they were coming from. So this morning I opened up the pantry to get my breakfast cereal and there was a mouse nibbling on the cheese in the trap Paul has had in there for weeks. I screamed, closed the door, and jumped on the counter. Lara was over and just started saying, "Oh no, oh no" and jumped on a chair in the kitchen. Darci was in the family room and I told her to run downstairs and get Paul. He came up and took one look at the mouse and said that it wasn’t nibbling cheese at all but had been before the trap snapped. The mouse was dead and Paul was excited to actually have caught a mouse. Zane was over at our house playing and thought it was cool and looked at the mouse before Paul threw it away. I really hope that George is that brave when he is three. I am more stressed than ever and don't know how I will ever go into the kitchen again, let alone open the pantry door. I am seriously so disturbed that I can't even put my feet on the ground and am writing this all bunched up in my office chair.

Holy Crap!

Alysha Witzel's husband read my post from Sunday and was so intrigued that he had her send me this video. Don't watch it if you had trouble sleeping after reading my previous post.

The worst thing ever...

Yes, this is even worse than pooing your pants in public (hypothetically speaking of course). I was digging in my Sunday diaper bag at church today and found four dead mice. Actually, I didn't know there were four of them at first. I had pulled a bunch of stuff out of the bag and saw what looked like parts of a dead mouse or maybe two dead mice or possibly a small bird (I didn't want to get too close) in the bottom of the bag and I got up and walked away from my bag. Then I asked one of the girls in my class to look in my bag and tell me what she saw. She wouldn't look because the look on my face was freaking her out. For those of you who don't know, my number one top fear is mice (cats are in second place but I am really working on that). So the fact that I didn't run screaming from the classroom is a huge accomplishment for me. When I was 17 and at girls camp I found a mouse in my tent and was screaming and crying so much that I started hyperventilating and the leaders yelled at me because I woke everyone up. Anyway, one of my friends (actually she is my best friend now) was in the class and she quietly took the bag to the bathroom and cleaned the whole thing out for me while I sat in class trying not to freak out. When she got back she said that there had been four baby mice in the bag and that they hadn't been dead for very long. I just want to say that even though I take an enormous diaper bag to church filled to the brim with treats, diapers, and toys I do clean it out every week and I don't let it become crumb infested so I don't think that the mice chose my Sunday diaper bag because there was a bunch of food spilled in there. After I calmed down a bit I called Paul (who had ditched class to go home and work) and told him he needed to clean out the closet where I keep the bag and set traps before I got home. He understands my fear and knows I couldn't deal with it on my own so he cleaned everything out and found a lot of droppings but no more mice (dead or alive). The mice in my bag were babies so there has to be a mother somewhere and now I am afraid of my house. Maybe I should start really working on my cat fear and then get a cat (except I am allergic) and that would assure that I don't have a mouse problem. I will probably just call an exterminator.
