me and a hammer...

Have you seen Ana's Knock Off Wood blog? I came across it late one night while procrastinating some other task (which probably still remains undone) and ended up sleeping fitfully as I couldn't keep my mind from spinning. I really wanted to make something. I read her entire website and finally decided on the Cameron Bookshelf. I had all of the wood cut to size at Home Depot. The only power tool I used was a drill (to pre-drill the holes) and the rest was completed with a large number of nails, a good old fashioned hammer, and a lot of encouragement and endless supervision from George (we had to battle it out over the color, he really wanted to paint it black). I planned to put the shelf in our dining room so I added a couple of inches to the length of the legs thinking it would give it more of a buffet look (it doesn't look like a buffet at all but I am still glad I added the height) and I also didn't add the trim down the middle of the sides or put a backing on it (I made these modification based on my personal preferences because as the builder that is just what you do). I finished it with Benjamin Moore's Wedgewood Gray and then Charlie took a putty knife to it so I decided to distress the whole thing. I had some rosewood stain leftover from a craft project and Lara's electric sander so I just started experimenting.

We use our dining room table as a game table and I wanted to store our games on the shelf (much better than on the middle of the table).

Here's a close-up of the finish.

The cute picture hanging above the shelf was a birthday gift from Travis and was painted by his very talented girlfriend Bridgette

Another close-up, I made that mark with my putty knife (an idea I stole from Charlie).

And this is what it looks like within the context of our dining room.

In case you can't tell by all of the pictures, commentary, etc., I am enormously proud of myself. I don't know that I will ever do anything like this again but it was really fun and incredibly gratifying to build something all by myself.

Seriously??? I am obsessed with that website too but haven't dared to try anything because we don't own any power tools. I am super impressed! I love your "interpretation" and superb photos as well. Good job, my friend! I may just have to get past my woodworking fears and try something...

That turned out so great! I don't know if I'd ever have enough confidence to build something like that. Especially if it was going to be somewhere where people could see it, I would be so afraid of it looking "homemade." But that is really amazing! I love the color and the distressed look. I think you should make more!

Amy what a wonderful job.............and to think I thought you couldn't even chew gum and run at the same time....ha ha Now you know this means I won't have to do anymore handyman jobs around your house. In fact I may just recruit you to do a few around my house. I do need a few photos hung. It just goes to show how very talented you really are. I very proud of you and how well the project came out.

It looks great! I wish I was as ambitious, I love that site too but just keep emailing my husband all the projects I want him to do. I need to get more brave with the compressor and all those tools in my garage. I am so impressed.

It looks perfect!!

I admit when I found the blog, the first thing I did was forward it to my husband so he could make stuff for me. I LOVE that you tackled it yourself!!

You continue to amaze me! You have darling children, keep up a blog, work, read and now you're building super cute furniture? I would love to build something. My dad built houses (including the one I grew up in). I did a bit of it with him. I love the smell of sawdust. Unfortunately, I have limited time on my hands right now. Maybe I'll build my grandkids stuff. It looks like you have a great addition to your dining room!
